Buddha's Birthday

The eighth day of the fourth lunar month, is the day to celebrate the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha, also known as "Bathing the Buddha Ceremony". 2570 years ago, the prince Siddhartha was born, pure water showered from the skies, bathing his royal body. Later, Buddhists celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday every year by holding the Bathing the Buddha Ceremony. Through bathing of the Buddha, Buddhists purify body, speech, and mind to eradicate greed, anger, and ignorance. Also, to dedicate the merits, may everyone be purified in body and mind, society be peaceful and auspicious, and the World be in harmony. We cordially invited you to join us in this celebration!

Hence, Buddhists conduct “Bathing the Buddha Ceremony” and prepare a tonic with fragrant herbs and spices to bathe Buddha statues for celebration of the Buddha’s birthday.

The meaning of bathing the Buddha: When we bathe the Buddha statue, we should sincerely pray for purification of our own defilements of greed, hatred, and anger. We should pray for peace and harmony everywhere, so that there is no more violence, deceit, and evil in the world. We should wish for our troubled world be transformed into a pure land and all minds be guided onto the bodhi path. This is the true meaning of bathing the Buddha.
